Robotic Art Dispenser
2001 – 2003. A functioning example of technology working for the artist.
So it’s a 1970s Coke machine with the paint ground off and slightly modified to accomodate 2-1/2" shipping tubes. And at 50 cents a pop, it’s not making anybody rich. But the Robotic Art Dispenser is a fine example of technology at work, of distribution art to the financially strapped enthusiast, of dispursing propaganda, fine art, stories, poetry, photographs and anything else we can squeeze into an 8-inch container.
The machine holds the works of ten Seattle based artists and represents a core philosophy of AFWFA — let technology serve man, let technology be the gateway to a different work model, and make art for the people. Plus it's cheap fun and you are never quite sure what you will get. We would make an army of art dispensers, but at this stage in the game, they make no money as most items cost more than the 50 cents you buy them for. And maybe that's what I love about art. People spend so much time making it with little or no financial reward. What is it about art that keeps us up late at night, that absorbs so much time and money in its creation, that torments and teases us to near exhaustion or insanity. It is a beautiful flower and an honest pursuit. It is the mountain top we'll never summit, the thirst that can't be quenched, the math equation that just doen’t add up.
