When we decided to work collectively, it was impossible not to draw similarities between our curious trio and the work of SuttonBeresCuller. They were already good friends of ours, and forming PDL was, in a sense, our way of starting a little rivalry. SBC was invited to create an installation at the Tacoma Art Museum and they stepped up to the challenge by dropping a reworked sailboat into the TAM courtyard — a space that already had a stone wave form in it. The trio was just a hair nervous about hoisting the old boat over the museum and into this glass box. The museum had alerted the media and wanted to show off this ambitious project — and harrowing install. So, it was suggested that PDL impersonate SBC. We would act as the art trio, speak with the media, eat free food and let SBC focus on the task of lifting the boat, carrying it over the roof of the museum, and dropping it into the courtyard.
Since the media was on high alert and expecting Sutton, Beres and Culler to be there, we didn't want to let them down and not look like real artists. We should make it obvious that we were the notorious trio. Regular clothes just wouldn’t do. So we channeled the classic French bohemian — horizontal-striped shirts, berets, scarves, and cigarettes dangling from our lips.
The only person who didn't find it funny was the reporter for the Daily Tribune, who posted our picture in the paper the very next day and identified us as John Sutton, Ben Beres and Zac Culler.
